Café Crem

Art, Music and Words around The Coffee Table

We are so lucky….

Just saying hello......

An ass in the wild.........and a donkey in the background

Every day, Miki and I head out at 12.40 to nearby Vera for our 1k swim.  It’s about a 20k round trip, and we take a usually deserted back road which almost goes ‘as the crow flies’ between our place and the pool.  It always seems like something amazing is happening on that road, giant lizards scuttle across in front of you, or a snake coils its way from one side of the road to the other, or great flurries of brightly coloured birds fly above us. The other day, the whole road seemed to be dancing with wedding confetti, when in fact, as we got closer we realized it was a myriad of butterflies.

"I'm staying with Dad....."

"Oi!!! What you looking at???"

Lately, we have taken to seeing a lovely donkey patiently waiting at the side of the road when we pass, and yesterday we could resist no longer and Miki got out to say hello.  Today we also decided to get some photos of the wonderful horses that we pass in the stables near the pool.

"I think horses are overrated..... (((sniff)))) "

How lucky we are!  Not only to be able to go off and swim every day, but to drive through this beautiful countryside that serves up fresh surprises at every turn.

Tree bien!

I found this extraordinary tree yesterday in the woods near the beach; I have no idea what sort of tree it is or how the marks got there, but it is “awesome”, isn’t it?pict03451

Hornet

Hornet

The colours spell danger-

Yellow and black in bold stripes,

And the drone like a chainsaw,

Cartoon-ish, exaggerated madly.

An unmistakeable intruder,

Buzzing wildly and bumbling

From window to wall,

Every footfall audible

Like a prehistoric bug

Blundering into our modern room.

And yet, I feel no fear.

This insect, as big as my thumb,

Does not terrify me.

I feel simply wonder and love.

Message from the Country

High on a hill there's a lonely goatherd.....

High on a hill there's a lonely goatherd....

Sometimes I forget that I used to live in a built-up suburb in a dreary northern English town. So much so, that I take for granted where we live, and the wide open spaces just beyond our doors.

But, every now and again, an alarm bell rings in the shape of the little tinkly ones around the necks of the goats that come grazing across the river bed. One look out of the window, and I realise just how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful place.

How the goats don’t tumble into the arroyo is something I still don’t understand. Have they got Velcro hooves?

'Ere Eric, watch your step, you'll end up as Paté.....‘Ere Eric, watch your step, you’ll end up as Paté….

Animalia Portuguesa – 2 cats, some fish…and a toad.

In my final entry in the “Animalia Portuguesa” series, I offer a disparate bunch from right across the spectrum of the Natural world. The first lot would eat the second lot, but don’t like to get wet, and the third one is equally at home in both the first and second’s environment! Enjoy….

This cat, from the Camp site at Campo Mayor, had such a beautiful face, but would not keep still long enough to get a clean shot! (The day before, that beautiful face had the back end of a mouse sticking out of it...

I call this the Moorish Cat. It prowled the walls and battlements of the Moorish Fort in Sintra. It had such a graceful fluid movement, and accompanied us throughout our visit.

Beneath the serene surface of the Sintra lakes on which the Black and White swans glided, the sundappled underworld teemed with beautiful fish.

As we came to the end of our exhausting climb to the entrance of the Palace de Pena at Sintra, I noticed a movement in the undergrowth, whereupon I discovered this magnificent fellow. Surely his residence here in Sintra rivals that of Toad of Toad Hall!
