  1. I drew these little fellas when I was aged around 13/14. I’d started a new pencil by the time I reached the third birdie, which is why he’s more defined than the other two! You live and learn. 🙂

  2. This is such a beautiful and tender drawing, Jenny. And well, I like birds, spent a lot of time in the past watching at them… I’m amazed how good you already were, so young… have you always drawn?

I think that the more defined bird appears as if it was the intention of the artist. It gives depth to the composition, and a kind of focussing. I use this trick often in my paintings.

  3. Thankyou, Miki. 🙂

Yes, I think I have always liked to have drawing materials available. I had a wonderful Art Teacher at school who encouraged me and, really, is responsible for my discovering I could draw passably well. I always remember, he had set us a task to take a photograph from a magazine, then divide it into squares and cut the photograph up. Then mix up the squares into an interesting pattern and draw, then paint, the end result. I chose the inside workings of a watch. I can remember working extra hours on this picture. It was done all in colours of blue and purple (lots of different shades thereof) with touches of white and black. Then there came the question of whether to define the grid system. I didn’t want to, because I liked the way the parts randomly met (or didn’t!) without definition. However, on that day we had a different Art Teacher who was insisting I drew in the lines in thick black paint. I was so determined not to, I went and found our original teacher for a second opinion. He said “No, definitely not” and came to back me up. I never forgot that as a lesson in standing up for myself. 🙂
