Café Crem

Art, Music and Words around The Coffee Table

A Good Morning

Let US  talk about US!  and I kept silent. I thought, lets see what is the first topic  about the USA! And waited, and waited, until someone talked about himself…  and many other interesting entries were written. Still I did not get it, I thought they were digressing from the subject. What a narrow mind!

I did not even see the first capital US until today. I tell you, I always saw it in lowercase. Looks like I made this up, but I didn’t. It’s called “escatoma”, we are blind to the  things we are not looking for. When we want to buy a car or house, , we start to notice all the  brands of cars that pass by and all the styles of houses around us.

I have been with a pain in the right  leg for while know and taking it easy. Not even writing or blogging.  It’s been a month now and I think I will have to look for a good specialist if it doesn’ disappear completely by Tuesday. That is its month anniversary.

I have been  reading the posts and taking a leave from all major activities hoping this pain would go  away, but hasn’t… This is the first weekend that I can walk around without a lot of pain, but I still wonder what it is/was. I planted some shrubs, got so see the whole 5 episodes of John Adams  with friends that came by and had  a cognac on the rocks on Friday. What a simple life! It cannot be better.

I started a  schedule for a certain type of meditations I like. I meditated surrounded by the Spring breeze today and after that, read from a book in my patio,   stopping only when I heard  the roaring motor of any  airplane   in route to the Burbank airport to take a photo. My sister and I like to take photos of airplanes in flight. She lived close to the Ontario, CA airport and had occasions to photograph  some of them at low altitude. So I took the hobby from her. As you can see, friends, I don’t have funny anecdotes to tell. Just Airplanes to show. The real reason of these photos is, I am always hoping one of these days I will see a strange flying  object in them. Of the un-indentified kind! I am like “Santo Tomas”, I need to see by myself.

My neighbors are all easy, not like Kevin’s and Miki’s,Ha-ha.. Sorry. I wish I had some  of that activity around my house!   I seldom even see my neihbors  and when I see them they are very amicable and polite. I have even given them a key to our house and I have a key to theirs in case we have any emergency and need help. We only see them when needed. For example, they take my empty trash cans in evey Friday I f I forget and I do the same for them. That is gesture of good will among us.  The neighbor in the  front… I will tell you about her in another occasion. She is the gossipy type. I disappear when I see her.  Good night, Good day and  good midnight to all.

  1. I like the planes dipping and soaring around your words Yolanda! A great hobby…I wonder, did you read about the British plane-spotting enthusiasts who were photographing them in Greece some years ago, and they were all arrested on spying charges by the Greek Government? It was quite a scandal! I also know a famous guy, Reg Presley, the singer with The 60’s group The Troggs (Wild Thing, Love is all around) who spends most of his money researching UFO’s. Once , we were doing an outdoor TV show in Germany together, and he became convinced there was one above us. It turned out to be the aerial camera on a balloon!

  2. Hi Yolanda!
Danu thought too that it was meant to speak about the USA. I did it on purpose, but at the end I guess it is not good if nobody understands what it is about! By the way, i always put the theme of Cafe Crem in the text field on the right side.
There are so many things which happen to each of us in our everyday life, or so many thoughts we have, or dreams, or plans, or memories of our past, or whatever. In fact, what most interests me in life, is the personal story of each of us and this is the reason why I I changed the concept of Cafe Crem. We can put now whatever we like, anything where we are more or less involved.
For example look, I deeply enjoyed to imagine you having a cognac on the rock with your friends. In my wild fantasy I even imagined you all 5 outside, by the sea, sitting on a rock and having your cognac! It does not matter that you probably had your cognac in front of the TV, I simply enjoyed so much reading that!
And I loved to hear you speaking about the planes, and about the neighbours, and even about the trash can! Everything, when it is told with intelligence humour, honesty is so interesting for me, adn for many other people too, I am sure!
And then there is your photos, I saw many already, they are beautiful… and your drawings, and your art generally… Yolanda, you have always been a very creative, interesting and humourful author in Cafe Crem, I don’t doubt that you have a lot to tell or show us, without stepping over the boundary of the intimacy you need.
But first of all, thank you so much for this first entry about the US, Kevin and me love it!

By the way I have tried to change the title and put US small everywhere, but since they have changed the design in WordPress, I can’t find the place where to change it anymore! Do you have an idea?

  3. I wish you great health Yolanda and a quick recovery.
Great to see this post today.
    Love the photos.
    Like your authenticity.
    Keep on writing here Yolanda.
    All the best!!!

  4. I have found it now and I have changed the title… nobody knows should think that we have to talk about US… but of course, you can, if you want!

  5. Thanks to all. It is always nice to have comments, you are all very nice and wellcoming. I have seen several posts about illnesses here, seems that Spring brought some of it, like they were dormat through the winter time.

About the objects, I think must of them are dust speckles on the camera lens, or “aerial camera” types. People will believe whatever they want to believe. I try to be objective and that is why I seek proof, although in my guts I know, there are many someone “out there” in the cosmos. There has to be.

“Potayto”, potato. Now we know what it was!

Ahh! the happiness of writing. I love it. I have been reading the long “epistles”, which take me into a long winding road imagining the things said, as Miki well describes here. Writing exercises our imagination.

  6. Good morning Yolanda.

  7. Kevin, here in “US” photographers have to mind where they thake photos. Some policemn act on the word of the law too closely… It’s a shame. A government of secrecy and threat is a bad government anywhere.

  8. I love your photos, Yolanda–changing direction, interspersed with the text, like the way we change our perspective when examining a topic.

I didn’t know there was a word for that–escatoma–although I wonder about why that happens all the time.

All my best wishes to you and your leg, Yolanda.

  9. I did not find the word in English. It was part of a seminar at work, many years ago to make us aware of selective blindness and cultural biases, and how to avoid that at work.

I found this psychological study which calls it “Inattentional blindness”.

In general, you don’t bring to your conscious attention those things that you …

    1) do not expect
    2) are not trained to look for
    5) or are not interested in

And in works in the opposite form also. If you desesperately want to see a UFO in a white cloud, you will see it!In that case it woudl be called differently but I am not aware of the terminology.

  10. I wonder if this word could apply to my husband’s case. He is always complaining about the kids’ toys on the living room floor, but somehow his dirty socks on the living room floor are invisible, and could lay there forever. He will even complain about how he has no socks to wear, when they are scattered on floors all throughout the house!

  11. Yep! I would use the information and tell him “Darling you need reprogramming, let’s see the shrink”

It happens all around the world, Ja, Ja, Ja. we don’t see what we don’t want. I wonder how we can rely on “eye witnesses” in court. The phenomena happens every time someone describes what they saw.

  12. Good night, Michael

  13. @Shelley – i must say I allowed myself a little smile at the phenomenon of your husband’s invisible socks! I fear he is not alone amongst the male population in this regard! 🙂
Perhaps i could suggest a mischievous solution? get the kids to hide his socks (bury them in the garden or something) whilst filling his sock draw with freshly laundered toys.
