Café Crem

Art, Music and Words around The Coffee Table

I drew it through the Grapevine…

I said it before, we did not buy any coffee cups in Portugal, but this does not mean that we didn’t drink any coffee on our trip. We both really enjoyed to sit in the local cafes, especially Kevin who was spending hours there, reading, waiting for me to do my sketches all over the place. This photo was taken in Miranda do Douro on such an occasion, I was sketching in the town (read the story) while Kevin was sitting on this lovely terrace in the shadow of the grapevine. After a while I joined him, we had a coffee together and I drew a solitary man reading the newspaper.

Very basic colours, I know, but this is really how it was! And as you can see on the photo too, I did not invent the thing with the Portuguese flag: they hang everywhere in Portugal, really everywhere, above all when it is the Football Cup and they are in! And don’t ask me why I deformed the cup in the drawing… I had that tendency in Portugal, to draw like that, all the houses and churches, for example, were tumbling down!

  1. Nice sketch, miki! I saw you really did a lot of drawing in Portugal and I suppose you’ll paint a lot also, from your remeberances… It was great even for me, reading your and Kev’s voyage impressions, looking at the splendid photos and drawings…

I observed your oblique houses etc. since there is an artist here in quebec who does exactly that, sistematically… What you did intuitively, he (or she? I don’t even know his – or her – sex…) does it every time, as a “trade mark”… I’ll search for it to show you…

  3. @ Danu
Thanks, and it is a great feeling to know that you have read our travel impressions!
I have indeed made many sketches in Portugal, and now still putting colours on some of them, but unfortunately I won’t have the time to make some paintings. I have to concentrate on other things right now, and for the next weeks…
I would be very curious to see the artist with the oblique houses, tell me please when you have found him/her. As always I can’t really understand how people can stay by one style, in this case the oblique stuff, as a trade mark… In this case really the houses would fall upon me and kill me!
As I did it, it just happened, as you say, intuitively, it never was an intention… and in fact as soon as I had done some in that style and noticed it, I stopped at once! But it always came back, somehow…

  5. Hi Danu, Supe! -Having just come back from a cold, wet and windy washout of a gig on the south coast of England, I can only say that Miki’s hope for Supe to have a sunny summer is a slim one! Shelley, one thing I loved about the cafes (and Miki captures it beautifully) is their splendid cafe furniture. The bright red is usually promoting the Portuguese beer Sagres, and looks great! Also we liked the Coca-Cola Zero Black white and red table and chair designs!

  7. Susan, it was so full of such wonderful vivid colours in Portugal! Everywhere! This is one of the reasons why I fell in love with it and can’t wait to go back there to paint again!
