“When In Rome, Do As the Romans Do”

This famous saying means that whenever you go anywhere, it’s wise to try to fit in with what the people in your new location are doing–in terms of dress, manners, habits and customs.

I was reminded of this while hearing on BBC News this morning of a proposal that Islamic Sharia Law being implemented there for a certain segment of society.  I think this is going to be a very controversial proposal.  Someone from Britain commented to me that if certain people want that, they can always move to Saudi Arabia.

I am always amazed at some of the tourists I see in Morocco (an Islamic country) who insist on sunbathing topless at four- and five-star hotels.  They aren’t arrested, but what people are thinking about them is for sure different than if they were doing the same thing in their own country.

These are just a couple of examples, but the meaning of this saying is that whenever you go someplace new, look around to see what people are doing, and try to fit in.  Even if you go to a dinner party in the home of someone from another country (or even from your own country, but if you are unsure o what to do), look at what your utensils your host is using, and copy them (which is what my mother taught me as a child).

Coffee’ doesn’t mean coffee! ‘Coffee’ means sex!

au-grain-de-cafe-3.jpg

Au Grain de Cafe {taken last night at Mont Tremblant while I was writing in my journal}

A woman’s late-night invitation to a man for a cup of coffee (typically after a date) has become code for an invitation to sex. This convention has become the subject of a great deal of comedy, and the treatments given to it in Seinfeld (in the words of George Costanza: “‘Coffee’ doesn’t mean coffee! ‘Coffee’ means sex!”) and Eddie Izzard (in Dress to Kill) are particularly noted. _ Social aspects of coffee {http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_aspects_of_coffee}

Noting that coffee is the number two consumable product next to oil in the world it struck me that coffee houses, cafes, bistros, etc. around the world have, since the establishment in 1645 of the First coffeehouse in Italy, been the gathering place for people to socialize. Coffeehouses provides social members with a place to congregate, talk, write, read, entertain one another, or pass the time, whether individually or in small groups. {http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffeehouse}

It is fact and conjecture that coffee has played a role in history and literature and if we were to be able to listen in on the entire wealth of conversations that took place throughout history around the world we would find the “origins” of many “proverbs and sayings.”

That is why I introduced this topic with a saying that lead to the possible origins of “Proverbs and Sayings” in this months theme.

Does this stir any ideas from anyone?~~michael

Necessity is the Mother of Invention

mothers

A wonderful saying, and so true. It is unsurprising therefore, to find that first appeared in the Greek Philospher Plato’s work “Republic”.

Could Plato, in all his musings, I wonder, have envisaged his wise words being appropriated by the eclectic musician Frank Zappa for the naming of his band “The Mother’s of Invention“? I think not! The band in turn inspired the famous lyric in Deep Purple’s classic anthem “Smoke on the Water”-”Frank Zappa and the Mothers, had the best place around..”

Strangely, referring to another saying in our current theme, there is an album by a band called Jellyfish entitled “Spilt Milk”. Now I will neatly connect my ramblings by telling you there’s a track on that very album entitled “Sabrina, Paste and Plato”…

Art imitating life, or the other way around?

happy birthday Danu+

gustos-cafe_2.jpg

Wishing you all the best this year and perhaps one day we might be sharing a coffee and war stories.

This photo is taken at Gusto’s Cafe in Ste-Sauveur.  I like it here because the music is great, the atmosphere is eclectic due to the presence of snowboarders of all ages and they have the biggest espresso bar ever.

Kindest,

Michael

“Better Late, Than Never!”

I try to put a lot of importance on my students getting to school on time. However, sometimes they are late for reasons beyond their control. When they come in late, guilty, and tiptoeing, I tell them, “Better late, than never!” Then they feel a bit better.

“Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk”

spilled-milk.jpg

I didn’t understand this one as a kid. Now I do. It means if you’ve made a mistake, if something has broken, don’t keep on crying over it, because that won’t do anything toward fixing it. Just let it go, and move on.
