Art, Music and Words around The Coffee Table

Coffee without cigarettes…

ION VINCENT DANU, Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada

I was not very sure, when Miki invited me here, at the Coffee Cup Club, that I would have a lot to say… My coffee mug is quite ordinary (although it has a special form, in order to give coffe a quicker way of cooling… and sometimes, when I’m in a hurry, I use the Russian method of slurping it from a small plate… a lot of nasty noises but very efficient…) and though I am an old coffee drinker, I do not smoke… I’m not a fanatical anti-smoker guy, though, and all my children smoke – it’s their lungs, after alll… So, I wasn’t sure I have a lot of things to say about coffee cups… But somehow the ideea got to me and I found myself day-dreaming and reflecting at subject quite close to coffee cups and even closer to coffee (this is a larger and much more interesting subject, maybe… )

Then I thought, hey! there is a whole movie based on the coffee & cigarettes thing! Jim Jarmush, a director I like very much, did it! A very funny, subtle and entertaining movie with some very picturesque characters and actors : Cate Blanchet is in it and the extraordinary (litterally!) Tom Waits… It’s a movie worth seeing and coffee and coffee cups are there all the way… Maybe a special essay on the coffee cups used in it would be funny also… Just a suggestion…

  1. Welcome to The CCC, Danu, and thanks so much for your participation. I can hear you slurping from here!
It is fascinating how many different artists and styles we already have here…
But tell me, you are such a good sketcher, why don´t you show us your cup? I´m pretty curious to see how it looks like, this special quicker way of cooling?! I´m happy too to see you slurping from the small plate in the Russian way…
Anysway… interesting entry and suggestion. I´ll have a look in Internet to the film… Kevin surely knows it, as he knows quite everything about cinema. He will comment when he comes back.
    Cheers, Danu!

  2. My pleasure, Miki! I’m slurping only when I’m in a hurry and I try not to be EVER in a hurry, following the Zen principle that “hurry is fatal”… Or I still have some drawings and paintings in me…

I won’t sketck my cup, for now, but I will post a photograph of it, in context…You’ll see what I mean… I certainly hope you and Kevin and others will jump in for a discusion about coffee movies and Jim Jarmush… I suppose we can do that in our CCC ? (coffee cup it’s a great subject but, maybe, a bit too specialized… ?)

  3. A painter called Anthony Ulinski says:
“I believe that the ordinary objects and small, private rituals of daily life, sometimes poignant, sometimes so commonplace as to be overlooked, are sacred and elegant”
I believe it too. Our coffee cups, if they could speak, which amazing stories they could tell! At least MY coffee cups could!
And this is the reason why I created the CCClub… just to let our coffee cups tell these stories, through their owners… Too specialised? Hum… no more and no less than each of us is, I think.

  4. I suppose you are right… In fact, I was thinking, reading you reply, at Boccaccio’s Decameron and at the 1001 nights… Of course, if you can tell coffee cup time stories the horizon becomes endless…

Concerning what Ulinski said I think also that “ordinary objects and small, private rituals of daily like” CAN BE sacred and elegant… You have to be in a special receptive mood to make them that way… it doesn’t happen each and every time…
